Why Warriors Lay Down & Die

Richard Trudgen is the author of Why Warriors Lay Down and Die.
He’s worked among people in Arnhem Land and has an extraordinary range of experience in this area.

One of his reasons for difficulties between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples was that there was a lack of understanding of each other's conceptual language.

He sees that problems of communication, particularly the lack of language speakers in the dominant culture, is the basic problem. This has lead to a lack of understanding of their cultural background by westerners, creating systems and organisations which conflict with Yolgnu law. High levels of stress, accompanied by the takeover of Indigenous jobs by Balanda (white people) on communities, is seen as causing many of the health problems.
